Walk the Camino: A Pilgrimage of Faith, History, and Renewal in May 2026

From Rev. Michelle Johnson

For more than a thousand years, pilgrims from across the world have walked the Camino de Santiago—also known as the Way of St. James. This ancient network of pilgrimage routes winds through the heart of Spain and leads to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, traditionally believed to house the remains of the apostle James. The Camino is more than a journey from one place to another; it is a sacred rhythm of walking, prayer, conversation, silence, and reflection that has shaped Christian faith for centuries.

From May 9–19, 2026, I will be leading a small group from Skidaway Island to walk the final 100 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago—the minimum distance required to receive the traditional Compostela certificate. This portion of the Camino is especially meaningful, carrying pilgrims through the green hills and villages of Galicia as anticipation builds with each step toward Santiago.

This pilgrimage is designed as a small-group experience, and I would love for one or two others from our conference to consider joining us. In addition to being a powerful personal spiritual journey, this trip would be ideal for those who may be discerning future pilgrimages from their own churches and want firsthand experience with group travel on the Camino.

A significant amount of walking is required on five of the days, but this pilgrimage is intentionally structured with van support, allowing participants to shorten walking days if needed. Each day will include time for prayer, reflection, and shared conversation, with comfortable lodging and thoughtfully planned logistics that allow us to focus on the heart of the pilgrimage rather than the details.

This journey is being offered in partnership with Educational Opportunities, an organization with deep experience in faith-based travel. You can find full details about the itinerary, accommodations, costs, and what’s included by visiting the trip page here:

If you are interested, curious, or simply want to begin a conversation about this pilgrimage—or about leading a future Camino experience from your own church—I would be delighted to talk with you.

Whether you are drawn by history, spiritual renewal, or the quiet power of putting one foot in front of the other, the Camino offers a rare invitation: to walk slowly, listen deeply, and discover what God may be teaching along the way.
